WORLD TEAM CUP 1961
1960

{short description of image} The first World Team Cup trophy was presented by the Polish weekly magazine "Motor". It was an antique silver vase, over 200 years old, from the 18th century reign of the Polish King, Stanislaw August.

It was originally planned in 1958 to give the trophy to the FIM for a proposed new competition to find the best CLUB team in Europe. But most countries had no league to determine their club champions, so the competition was still-born. However, the trophy had already been inscribed The Europe Challenge Trophy - presented by the Polish Motor Weekly to the Best Club Speedway Team

Then a European National Team competition was suggested, and a trial meeting was staged at Oberhausen in September 1959 (results here). It was a success, and the new World (as opposed to European) Team Cup was launched in 1960, with the Motor trophy being presented to the winners.

In 1964, after winning the trophy for the third consecutive year, Sweden were presented with the trophy to keep. It is held by SVEMO - still, of course, with the original inscription. The editors of Motor provided a new trophy for the 1965 season.

BRITISH ROUND (Winner to Final)
18.07 : Wimbledon England 35 New Zealand 28 Australia 18 Challengers 15
21.07 : Oxford England 24 New Zealand 27 Australia 22 Challengers 23
05.08 : Swindon England 33 New Zealand 23 Australia 12 Challengers 28
10.08 : Belle Vue (Hyde Road) England 42 New Zealand 28 Australia 20 Challengers 6
Aggregate scores England 134 New Zealand 106 Australia 72 Challengers 72
The new competition got off to an excellent start in the U.K, with all four meetings being packed with top class racing. With one rider from each country in each heat, the race formula was credited with supplying cut-throat racing as supplied by individual events, rather than team riding. Peter Craven dominated the series, suffering just one defeat, to Ronnie Moore in the last of his 16 rides.
