Sweden struggle early on ... then win the Final without the World Champion!
The Latvia team, weakened by the absence of Puodzhuks and Paura due to a crash at practice a week earlier, just failed to take home track advantage in the qualifying round, when Slovenia's Zagar won a run-off for the second qualifying place in the finals, behind winners Germany, who lost Stange with an injury in a ht 18 fall.

The finals were staged in Denmark for the first time, but got off to a predictable start as the home team cruised through to the Final in the weakest of the three "Events". Despite a terrific battle between Australia and GB (as usual) in Event 2, the racing at Outrup was mostly processional. GB, without the injured Loram (though he had threatened to miss the SWC due to 5-rider races in later rounds), took a one point lead in ht 22, but were then beaten by Aussie riders in all of the remaining 3 races. The USA had withdrawn from this round due to injury and other problems.

Poland scored a surprising win in Event 3 over Sweden, in another two-horse race. The last heat was run 4 times - initially Hell was

excluded for colliding into Jonsson, while in the rerun the Swede was
clipped by Gafurov on his way into the fence. AJ was feeling somewhat second-hand by this time. It was Protasiewicz's turn to be excluded when his bike reared up and he fell, leaving Jonsson to ride 4 laps unopposed in the final re-run.

In the Race-Off, no one had predicted that GB would produce a magnificent performance to lead all the way. Sweden, without World Champion Rickardsson (suffering the effects of a week-old concussion), just scraped into the Final when they won a last-heat decider for second place with the Czechs.

Sweden had not enjoyed a good week, but that all changed in the Final when, led by the stunning return to form of Mikael Max, and despite the continued absence of Rickardsson, they shocked 6-4 on favourites Australia, who had led for most of the meeting. On a terrible Vojens track, the Australians wilted at the finish, scoring just 3 points out of a possible 16 in the last four races. GB had a wonderful week, but simply ran out of steam.
