The revival of this Test
series after a gap of 16 years proved to be premature. With only four
riders of international standard, the lack of points from the Australian
second-strings and reserves were decisive in England's comfortable
victories, though the racing was always interesting. Australia's cause was not helped by the disappointment of John Boulger scoring just a single point in fourteen rides (due in part to mechanical problems); the decision of the authorities to allow Middleton to miss the Sheffield match in order to fulfill an open booking in Germany; and the loss of both Monk and Middleton from their 3rd. Test team due to their riding in league matches on the same night. Captain Airey led from the front, and Mudge was (as always) the ultimate professional, but 42 last places in the 54 races of this series tells the Australian story. It was all too easy for a strong home squad, who quickly recovered from the early loss of Hunter (groin injury) and Wilson in the first few heats of the 1st.Test, and who ended the series with two maximum-men at Wolverhampton. |

After two rain-offs, the much anticipated decider at Cradley Heath was disappointing. When Australia went six points ahead after just two races it was thought that a strong-looking England team may be tested, but within 3 races the scores were level, and then four successive 5-1's put the result beyond doubt by the interval. With their three heat-leaders (Airey, Boulger, and Monk) contributing just 13 points, it was just as well that Halifax's Les Sharpe chose this match to record his best-ever Test score, and deny Terry Betts a maximum. |

It was a one-sided opener at Oxford, where only a superb performance from home pairing Dugard and Barker gave the crowd anything to get excited about, but the Australians fought all the way at Reading where they needed two 5-1's in the last two heats to draw the match, and almost got them but for a stunning ride by England hero Ray Morton in the last race when he split the Australian pair of Boyce and Bowes. England had lost both Smith and Barker through injury during this match, but in the final match at Peterborough (the first senior international to be staged on a second division track) both countries were to lose a rider when Dugard and Lyons crashed in ht.8, suffering a collarbone injury and concussion respectively. Australia then dominated the second-half of the match for a comfortable win. |

England adapted to the conditions
better than most of the Australian team at a very wet Poole in the
series opener, but at Sheffield the next night it was a very different
story as the the Aussies scored four 5-1 maximum heat wins in the first
six races, and England tamely surrendered. At the King's Lynn decider, Australia suffered engine problems in heats 3, 4, and 5, allowing England to score a 4-2 on each occasion to build an early 6-point lead. But with these problems solved, Australia quickly gained a lead which they never looked like losing against an effectively 2-man home team. |

Despite being without Leigh Adams (injured) and
Ryan Sullivan (ill), Australia led 25-23 at the halfway stage of the
first Test at a rough Hull circuit, but the home countries' strength in
depth, and notably the form of home reserve Thorp, ensured a comfortable
home win. The by now full-strength Australians held a small lead for most of the second match, though a Tatum/Screen 4-2 tied the scores in the penultimate heat. England looked to have thrown the match away in the decider when first Dugard was excluded for touching the tapes, and then replacement Schofield was similarly penalised for riding through them. The other reserve, Screen, had already taken his full allocation of rides, following a serious back injury sustained by skipper Havelock in heat 6 when he ploughed into the fallen Lyons and his machine. So Chris Louis was left to face Leigh Adams and the unbeaten Aussie skipper (and home track rider) Craig Boyce alone, but he gated superbly to win the race, tie the match, and ensure that England could not lose the series. England quickly recovered from an early defecit to record a fine win at Wolverhampton, while Australia used 3 tactical substitutes to keep it competitive. This was a classic match with some fine racing (in front of Sky TV cameras), none more so than in heat 14 when Dugard went around Adams, then inside Lyons on the final bend, for a great win to ensure his teams' victory and to earn him a standing ovation from the normally anti-Dugard Monmore Green crowd. |

Louis and Screen led England to victory at Belle Vue over an Australian team for whom Boyce received little heat leader support, but the Aussies were, as expected, much more impressive on the Swindon track where they went 8 points ahead after eight races. England fought back well, with Screen figuring in a 5-1 and a 4-2 in successive heats, though the visitors forged ahead in the later stages, with Steve Johnston their surprise top scorer. Four England riders managed a total of just seven points and one of them, Hurry, missed his first two rides, arriving late following his riding in the afternoon's British Masters grasstrack. The Eastbourne track for the decider was thought to favour England, but Australia dominated a disappointing match, all but one member of their team being paid for a race win. |

Paul Hurry, joint top-scorer and most exciting
rider of the night, led England, under new team manager Dave Jessup, to
a comfortable win at Wolverhampton over an Australian team which badly
missed the injured Jason Crump. England won the series in an incident-filled match at rainy Eastbourne. Debutant Cunningham passed Parker and Lemon to join Hurry for a 5-1 in heat 2, but fell on the slippery circuit causing Lemon to lay his bike down. England led by 2 points after seven races, but were then to score 3 successive 5-1's in heats 8, 9, & 10 when an Australian fell in each of those races at almost the same spot - once for Parker, and twice for Lemon. Crump took 8 points in races 11, 12, & 13 to reduce his teams' defecit to 10 points, but Hurry beat Sullivan from behind to win the 14th race and ensure a home win. As lightning flashed, the starting gate malfunctioned , and the last 2 heats began on the green light. In the final heat, Dugard jumped the start and was excluded, but then reinstated by referee Ebdon. In the rerun Adams got away ahead of the field and was excluded, which was followed by (unsuccessful) protests from his team manager Neil Street. Already without Scott Nicholls for the final two matches, England also lost Mark Loram with a knee injury in his first ride of the final Test at King's Lynn, and were well-beaten by a determined Australia team for whom Crump scored the only maximum of the series. |

England built up a lead of 8 points by the halfway stage of the opening Test, but engine problems for both Dugard and Hurry allowed Australia to take their chances and pull level. At Hull, amidst all the Elite League and GP stars, it was Premier League number 1, a very aggressive Carl Stonehewer, who was instrumental in winning the second match of the series for England when he came under Lyons for third place in the final, nominated riders heat. It had been a see-saw encounter, with the home country building a 6 point lead after 6 races, before Australia fought back with 2 5-1's and a 4-2 to lead by four points. Dugard and that man Stonehewer scored the 5-1 that put England back on level terms in heat 14, before Stoney joined race winner Louis for the match winning 4-2. Crump, after a sluggish display, fell and suffered shoulder and rib injuries which kept him out of the final Test at Oxford where England, inspired by 20 points from reserves Hurry and Stoney, ran rampant over an Australian team who never recovered from conceding three successive 5-1's in heats 4, 5, & 6. |
