By 1935 the Australian ranks were getting a bit thin, with a mere half dozen riders of Test standard, but still England made very hard work of winning the opening Test at Wembley. Rain fell for most of the match, which meant little entertainment for the fans, and only Belle Vue riders such as Langton, Kitchen and Grosskreutz impressed (must be due tio their familiarity with the Manchester weather). Another poor meeting followed at New Cross, though the home crowd were pleased to see Farndon (at the peak of his career) regain his England place after being strangely omitted from the 1st Test and top score for his country.
Plenty of fine racing, falls and incidents at Belle Vue, but a superb Langton led England to another win and an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the series. Huxley's poor form continued for Australia, while Case was nowhere near his best after a heavy crash into the fence in his first ride. England scored just one heat advantage, and supplied only 2 of the 18 race winners in a terrible display as they were surprisingly crushed by Australia on the wide open spaces of West Ham in the 4th Test. Grosskreutz led a determined Oz squad with some fine starts and received good support from all his team. When England went 10 points up after just 6 races at Harringay, the match looked all over, but by the interval the scores were level. Alas, as rain continued to fall in the second 9 heats, England's Northern riders led the team to an ultimately comfortable victory.

These beautiful plaques were presented to the riders who took part in the England v Australia Test series in the 1930's. This one, still in excellent condition, was presented to England's H R "Ginger" Lees for his four appearnaces (4 stars at the top) in the 1936 series. This comes from the collection of Allen Trump.

Due to the weakness of the Australian team, this projected 5-match series was curtailed after one match, and replaced by an England v Overseas series. Australia were without Huxley (retired), and Grosskreutz (now a promoter at Norwich), and would have lost Ron Johnson (suspended). Bluey Wilkinson would also have missed the planned 2nd Test due to injury.

With the "senior" Test Series abandoned, the Australians were asked to field their strongest possible teams in a 5-match series of international matches (NOT Test Matches) against teams of English riders from the National Provincial League (effectively a 2nd Division). The England team in this series was sometimes referred to in the speedway press and programmes as Provincial Riders, English Provincial League, English Provincial Riders, or Provinces.
The 3rd match was originally due to be held at Liverpool but the track closed. The league team - and this match - was moved to Belle Vue (Hyde Road)
