This was the first official post-war international in Australia having been sanctioned by the Victorian ACU. The attendance was put at about 20,000 with Police reinforcements called out to the track when the unexpectedly large crowd broke down the fences and thousands entered the ground free. Dozens of people were injured in the stampede to gain entrance.
