INTERNATIONALS - ITALY
Italy v Soviet Union
1965 | An excellent find by David Austin,
who has discovered brief details of this match on the website
www.autosport.com . He says: |
|||||
"At the end of August / September
1965 an automotorsport international took place between Italy and the
USSR with three disciplines included - motocross, speedway and
road-racing. The scores from all three competitions were aggregated and the final score was Italy 127 USSR 97. Individually, the Soviets beat Italy 32-7 at motocross and the Italians won the road-racing, which was held at Monza on 19th September, 87-20. The speedway took place at Lonigo but the scores were not given. However, with the motocross and road-racing results known, the result must have been Italy 33 USSR 45. The Italian team is not given but the Soviet team was as follows: Igor Plechhanov, Gab Kadirov, Yuri Chekranov, Gennady Kurilenko, Vladimir Sokolov, Viktor Trofimov, Valentin Moiseyev" |
||||||
Needless to say, if anyone has any further details of this match, I - and David - would be pleased to hear about it!
Roger Stevens writes to say that an
Italian friend was at this meeting, and that the speedway meeting took
place over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday). It was at the old Lonigo "Hippodrome"
track, the current track not having opened until the late 1970's. |

Anselmo De Toni gives dates as Sat 11 & Sun 12.09.1965. He supplies the results of the individual contest (containing 6 Russian & 6 Italian riders) on each day, which were won by Igor Plechanov (Saturday) and Gennady Kurilenko (Sunday). The Russians, mounted on Eso's, easily dominated the Italians, who were riding JAPs. The Russian riders were as above, although Moiseyev didn't ride. The 6 Italians in the individual contests were Renzo Travagnini, Mario Rupil, Bon Giordano, Walter Fantuzzi, Carlo Mazzuccato, and Dante Zilli. The Russian riders outscored the Italians on both days by the same points total - 73 to 17. But there is no mention of a team contest.
At Lonigo, left to right: Sokolov, Trofimov, and Plechanov (from "50years 1947-1997 Moto Club Lonigo")
