THE "ALMOST" INTERNATIONALS

The UK "National League" matches

In the 1980's, the "2nd division" of speedway in the UK, the National League, raced several series of representative matches against Poland, Sweden, Australia, and a British League Young England team. In fact, the National League was effectively a Great Britain Division 2 team, for only against Young England were any riders other than British used.

In total, the National League raced 25 matches, of which they won 8, drew 1, and lost 16.

A disastrous tour began with Poland, having completed a 36-hour overland trek to the UK, arriving late, causing the Wimbledon start time to be delayed by an hour. Their party included only 7 instead of the expected 9 riders, and only 4 of those were as programmed. They lost Dolomoisciewicz from the first match after a fall in his first ride, and the match was almost a whitewash. The second match at Edinburgh was rained-off, and Stoke probably wished their match was as well. There was no lack of effort from the Polish riders, some of whom were outclassed - perhaps a little more effort from the PZM in terms of orgamisation could have avoided this shambles. As a spectator at the Wimbledon match, I can only admit to spending most of my time in the bar, and leaving early - most unusual for me!

A superb opening match ended controversially when, in the final heat, Butler was excluded after he and partner Poole went into the fence. Despite protests at the exclusion, Poole lined up alone for his country in the rerun - and won it, to earn his team a deserved draw, after Galvin was excluded for cutting across him on the drive from the tapes to the first bend. The NL team at Edinburgh was a shambles - 4 of the selected team didn't ride (Kenny McKinna and Crabtree rode for their clubs, Loram was injured, and Les Collins' flight from Manchester was cancelled) and two of the replacements failed to appear (Dean Barker chose to ride in an open meeting at Oxford, while Peter Carr accompanied brother Louis (and his team Stoke) to a match at Hackney where he got involved in a fight in the pits). Mark Courtney and Blackburn made little or no effort, so Australia won easily. The Ipswich match clashed with the Commonwealth Final at Belle Vue (which robbed the Aussies of Doyle, Butler, and Davies) so the NL won comfortably as they did at Poole, when Australia's reserves saved their team a hammering by being paid for 32 points in 14 rides. More controversy in an otherwise dull match at Hackney when ref Ebdon failed to stop a race when Mogridge fell and was trapped under his machine. A two-fingered salute to the ref earned him exclusion, not only from the rerun of the race, but from his next race as well!
