| Bill Melluish | - | - | - | 4 | 4+1 | 8 +1 | A weak England team escaped an even more crushing defeat thanks to the discontent in the Australian ranks. Duggan, Lawson, and Grosskreutz withdrew from the 1st.Test, because their team was not the strongest available, then were suspended from the 2nd. England failed to take advantage of the situation, when they lost Olly Hart with a broken arm in the first race at Brisbane, who were staging their first-ever Test match. Then Malcolm Craven sailed for home, unable to make the trip pay, and with weak reserves, and up against much stronger home teams, England were well-beaten in the final three Tests. | ||||||||

| A relatively inexperienced England
team were well beaten in the opening match of this unofficial series
when Australia's top two, Lawson and Warren, dropped just a single point
between them, but the racing was close and exciting. England captain
Jack Parker was excellent in this match and throughout the tour. The second match was marred by tragedy in the last lap of the final heat, when Ken Le Breton was catapulted into the fence due to his front wheel touching the rear wheel of Eddie Rigg. His injuries included a fractured skull but, following his death the next day, medical opinion was that a punctured lung, a result of his bike falling on him, was the cause of death. Jack Gates, who had been unable to hold down a reserve place with Wembley a few months earlier, was Australia's surprise star. England reserve Derrick Tailby, who suffered concussion, a broken thumb, and a knee injury in a heat 4 crash with Le Breton, returned to the UK. As a result Ron Clarke, resident at Perth for the season, was flown in to strengthen the England team - this was just as well, because Eric Williams withdrew from the third match at short notice with tonsilitis. Despite a superb unbeaten display by Parker, Australia cruised to another comfortable win due to the weakness of the tourists' second-strings and reserves - this was the case in every match. None more so than at Bathurst (where the 4th match was staged following the closure of Newcastle) where Parker scored almost half his teams' total points, though four of the visitors' machines had been damaged in a road accident earlier in the day. Eddie Rigg missed England's last 3 matches due to injury, and the tourists were struggling to track a 6-man team, especially when Clarke returned to Perth after the match at Adelaide. Were it not for fine displays from the three England heat-leaders, Australia would have run riot in the last two Tests, though they no difficulty achieving a 7-0 series whitewash. And this, it should be remembered, was a somewhat less than full strength Australian team - Jack Young had remained in the UK ; Warren had ridden just one match, and then suffered a fractured skull in a crash in New Zealand ; plus, of course, the death of the highly talented Le Breton. England's only consolation was that 43 year old Jack Parker dominated the Australian domestic scene, winning both the 3-Lap and 4-Lap Australian Championships. Heat details and scorecharts here |
